Rosarita is a by-product of the gold refining process in Alaska in the 50s and 60s. Trace amounts of gold would be lost and end up melted in with the sand from the refining process, producing a beautifully colored waste product from the melted sand and gold. Modern processes don't allow enough gold to escape to colour the melted by-product, so it is only available from old sources.
